About Erlenmeyer

Erlenmeyer is a small stationery business established in 2015, which operates in Australia and the UK. Its product range includes greeting cards, playing cards, stickers, zines and art prints, all of which feature the work of Stephanie Avila Gray, a Bristol-based illustrator specialising in fine ink pen and watercolour paintings.

Erlenmeyer is also the name of Avila Gray's storytelling animal kingdom; a futuristic utopia where sentient creatures live in harmony across 12 cities on Earth. All of the compositions from her illustrative range depict snapshots from this story; her body of work shows the animal characters that colour the Erlenmeyer world, as well as their culture, values and how they live.

Currently, Avila Gray is based in Bristol in the UK, where she is working as a social worker and writing an encyclopaedia on the Erlenmeyer world. Erlenmeyer UK operates online and at markets in the Somerset area. Erlenmeyer Australia is under the operational management of one of Avila Gray's close friends and continues to be open for business.

~ History of Erlenmeyer ~

Avila Gray has been selling her illustrations and products since 2014 and became a resident at Australia’s iconic Rocks Market for many years, developing a loyal customer base and social media following. After several years of trade shows in Sydney and London, her designs can now be found in more than 80 shops worldwide. Her Australian stockists include Dymocks Books, Berkelouw Books & Harry Hartog.

In 2020 Avila Gray co-established a business called the Artisans’ Nest; a handmade collective retail venture that provided a selling platform for Sydney’s local designers and makers. Artisans’ Nest was set up to help the creative community regain some of the sales, exposure and business momentum lost due to Covid-19, as well as to provide a social support network for local makers.

~ Words from the Artist ~

"Since a very young age I have always loved reading and exploring imaginary worlds. I am particularly intrigued by societal structures and politics, and my goal with Erlenmeyer is to create an ideological context within which I can write children’s books that explore the value of living ethically and inclusively with others. This is my primary project for 2022.

I enjoy creating highly detailed scenes which are centred around my characters, music and the urban environment. I like to create faithful recreations of recognisable things to achieve maximum engagement with the audience. It is my mission to make it the most uplifting, romantic, humorous and passionate version of the truth that I can, with a touch of nostalgia thrown into the mix. Thank you for taking the time to consider my work, I hope you enjoy it!"
